About the Embassy [go top]

Before the establishment of the Residential Mission in Doha, the Nepal Embassy in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was accredited as the non-residential Embassy of Nepal to the State of Qatar. As the number of the Nepalese nationals in the employment market of Qatar increased significantly during late 1990s, the need for a separate mission was felt. With a rapid increase in the number of Nepalese nationals the problems and grievances of the workers also increased voluminously. Incidentally, in 1998 Rt. Hon’ble Mr. Girija Prasad Koirala, the then Prime Minister of Nepal paid an official visit to the State of Qatar. During the visit of the Prime Minister the Nepalese community briefed him about the conditions of the Nepalese expatriates working in Qatar and also highlighted the continued prospects of the demand of Nepalese workers in the development projects in Qatar. During the visit of the Prime Minister, the Qatari authorities also requested him to open up a Mission in Doha to look after the welfare of the Nepalese expatriates. Realizing the problems and prospects of the Nepalese in Qatar the Government of Nepal decided to open up a permanent residential mission headed by a full-fledged Ambassador in Doha. Then, urgently, The Government of Nepal established the Embassy of Nepal in Doha and appointed Mr. Shyamananda Suman, a carrier diplomat serving in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the first Residential Nepalese Ambassador to the State of Qatar. He presented his Letter of Credence to His Highness the Emir of the State of Qatar Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani on July 11, 2000. Thus, the Embassy of Nepal was permanently established on the same day, i.e., July 11, 2000.
